Exclusive: Celtic tipped to sign McGregor's pal if Elyounoussi deal collapses
Frank McAvennie has suggested Celtic make a move to re-sign Patrick Roberts if they cannot strike a deal with Southampton for Mohamed Elyounoussi.
The Hoops and West Ham legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed Roberts, 23, was a much liked figure in the dressing room at Parkhead while on loan between 2016 and 2018.
Football Insider revealed at the end of May that a permanent deal for Elyounoussi, 25, would only be pursued if Southampton lowered their asking price.
Roberts, who is currently on loan at Championship side Middlesborough, scored 18 goals and contributed 26 assists in his 78 appearances for the Hoops.
McAvennie would like to see the Manchester City winger back at Parkhead but admits any potential move would be reliant on Elyounoussi.
“Roberts is a very good player,” he told Football Insider.

“He gave Jamie Forrest a kick up the backside which was great.
“I do not know what is happening with Elyounoussi and if they re-sign him I do not see the need for Roberts.
“The fans would love to see him back though because he was a wonderful player.
“Him and Callum McGregor were good pals. He got on well with the boys.
“I wouldn’t rule out bringing him back. He did very well at Celtic and he loved it.
“If he has not got a career elsewhere it would be nice if he returned but I think any move would be reliant on Elyounoussi though.”
Lennon, when speaking on the prospect of keeping Fraser Forster and Elyounoussi this summer, said: “I don’t think it’s unrealistic.
“They are two players we would dearly love to have for next season.”
In other Celtic news, Frank McAvennie has told Football Insider he wishes Hoops legend was appointed to recently filled role.
