Don't feel sorry for Man United star Maguire - 'he's making an absolute fortune', says pundit
There is no need to feel sorry for Man United outcast Harry Maguire despite the abuse he endured for England.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former West Ham and Scotland striker Frank McAvennie slammed Gareth Southgate for bringing Maguire off the bench against Scotland on Tuesday (12 September).
The centre-back was named as a substitute in the 150th anniversary match during this week’s international break and was brought on in the second half.
The former United captain endured abuse from both sets of fans for the duration of his time on the pitch and, to make matters worse, also scored an own goal in the 3-1 win over their rivals.
Speaking after the game, Southgate condemned the fans’ treatment of Maguire and insisted the defender has been a crucial part of the side’s success in recent years.
The England manager said that he has never seen a player treated so badly.

But McAvennie blamed the boss for the abuse Maguire received on Tuesday night.
“I do not understand why you would bring him on because it is a cauldron,” he told Football Insider.
“No matter how much of a player you are when you go into a Scotland v England game the noise is mental and that will have just pushed him further down the line.
“I feel sorry for him but not too much because he is making an absolute fortune so I am sure he will get over it very quickly.”
