McAvennie excited by what he's just seen at Newcastle United

Newcastle United are going to “hurt” teams in the Champions League after their hard fought draw against AC Milan.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former West Ham striker Frank McAvennie said teams like Borussia Dortmund will be expecting to wipe the floor with Newcastle and will be punished for it.

Eddie Howe’s side earned a point on Tuesday (19 September) against AC Milan with a 0-0 draw at the San Siro in the opening game of their Champions League campaign.

Despite facing 25 shots from the hosts, the Magpies managed to keep a clean sheet and secure an all important point on match day one.

Newcastle welcome Paris Saint-Germain to St James’ Park on 4 October followed by a visit from Borussia Dortmund later in the same month.

McAvennie has backed the north east giants to take something from their group.

That is a good result away from home. They will be very happy with it.

The fans will be loving it because it is a top team, the players will be loving it.

I think Dortmund might take them for granted and just think it is a guaranteed three points. Newcastle have got players that can hurt them so I can definitely see them getting a result.

Howe has endured a difficult start to the 2023-24 Premier League season with just two wins from their first five games.

The Magpies have conceded seven goals in those outings but have found the back of the net eight times in the English top flight.
