VAR let Celtic down as Gustaf Lagerbielke footage re-analysed - expert
Gustaf Lagerbielke did not deserve to be sent off for Celtic against Feyenoord.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Hoops striker Frank McAvennie said referee Irfan Peljto should have “used common sense” and not sent off Lagerbielke.
As shown on TNT Sports (19 September), 23-year-old was shown a second yellow card after his outstretched arm took down Calvin Stengs in the Hoops’ penalty area.
The decision to award the spot kick was checked by VAR, who agreed with the onfield official, but Joe Hart managed to save the penalty.
The Celts went on to lose the game 2-0 with substitute Odin Thiago Holm also shown a red card mere minutes after his teammate.
McAvennie insisted Lagerbielke was unlucky to be shown a second yellow.

“I do not think it was a sending off, I think it was harsh,” he told Football Insider.
“If anything the two of them should have got booked. The referee should have said he is on a booking already, that is not good enough for a sending off.
“I think the referee could have used a bit of common sense. There is not a lot they can do about it now but I am disappointed the same as a lot of Celtic fans were.“
Lagerbielke is set to miss the next Champion League match against Lazio at Parkhead and poses further problems for Brendan Rodgers who was already struggling for central defenders.
Maik Nawrocki, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Nat Phillips and Stephen Welsh are all sidelined with injuries and it is unclear whether any will be fit enough to make the starting lineup next week.
