Pundit drops 'big' Newcastle United claim after latest - 'it is brilliant'

Newcastle United will be favourites to win the league cup following their win over Man City (27 September).

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former West Ham striker Frank McAvennie has backed Newcastle to go all the way in the competition after Wednesday night’s “brilliant” performance.

As shown on Sky Sports (27 September), Alexander Isak’s goal was the difference between the sides as the Magpies played out a 1-0 win over the reigning Premier League champions.

Eddie Howe’s side made it to the final of the competition last season where they lost 2-0 to Man United earlier this year.

The north east giants will be hoping to go one better this year and McAvennie insisted they will be the top pick to lift the trophy.

It is brilliant for them,” he told Football Insider.

It was a big result and Newcastle are doing well at the moment they are all fighting for each other and they have got some decent players.

I am not surprised to see them progressing. I think Newcastle will be favourites to win the whole thing now, especially with Arsenal playing West Ham because if West Ham have got a chance to beat them they could very well take it.”

The Magpies are yet to lift the League Cup trophy but have been FA Cup winners six times in their history, most recently in 1955.

Newcastle last won a trophy in 2017 when they were crowned champions of the English second division.
