Sources: Rarely-seen attacker in line for Liverpool starting role

Divock Origi is set for a key role at Liverpool over the coming weeks as the club’s fixture schedule intensifies, Football Insider understands.

The Champions League final hero has started just two matches this season and once again played second fiddle to the first choice forward trio.

A Liverpool source has told Football Insider that Jurgen Klopp and his coaching staff are planning on increasing Origi’s minutes as the matches come thick and fast.

The forward, 24, is being lined up for a starting role, most likely against Genk in his native Belgium in the Champions League clash next Wednesday.

Mohamed Salah has been an injury doubt for Sunday’s Premier League showdown against Manchester United but, if he is given the all-clear, Klopp is unlikely to change his front three.

The holy trinity of Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane make it difficult for Origi to force his way into the team despite his remarkable scoring exploits last season.

The Belgian has been a substitute six times this season, with his two starts coming in the Premier League against Norwich City and Newcastle United.

But Liverpool have seven fixtures before the next international break, with a heavy programme that includes midweek matches every week, including one in the League Cup against Arsenal and two in the Champions League.

Origi wrote himself into Liverpool folklore with his performances in the Champions League final and semi-final against Tottenham and Barcelona.

He has been used predominantly on the left side of the attack by Klopp when he has played, rather than in the centre-forward role where he first made his name at Anfield.
