Sources: Big update on Rangers potentially appointing Lampard after talks

Rangers are yet to decide whether to move forward with Frank Lampard as he vies to become the club’s next manager, sources have told Football Insider.

It is believed the Ibrox club are still open to exploring other options as they look for Michael Beale’s successor.

Football Insider revealed on Friday (5 October) that Lampard is on the shortlist to become the next manager of Rangers.

A well-placed source has revealed that the legendary former Chelsea midfielder has held talks with club chiefs about taking the hot seat.

Sources say Lampard is “definitely interested” in taking the role after his sacking at Everton in January.

However, it is believed he has not yet been slated for the next set of interviews lined up by Rangers for next week, which appears to suggest he is out of the running.

Rangers sacked Beale on Sunday (1 October), leaving Steven Davis in interim charge of the Glasgow giants.

The ex-Queens Park Rangers boss leaves the club some seven points adrift of rivals and runaway leaders Celtic.

Davis has already taken charge of his first game, a 2-1 loss away at Cypriot side Aris Limassol in the Europa League.

Lampard last managed at Chelsea in an interim spell at the end of the 2022-23 campaign, following Graham Potter’s sacking.

He won just one of a possible 11 games upon his return to Stamford Bridge – where he was previously employed as the full-time manager between 2019 and 2021.

The 45-year-old has won 83 of a possible 196 matches in charge at Chelsea, Everton and Derby County.

Rangers are next in action against St Mirren on Sunday (8 October).

They face a crucial double-header against Sparta Prague on 26 October and 9 November with qualification for the Europa League’s group stages at stake.
