Sources: Liverpool now set to pull plug on Hincapie deal after agent speaks out

Liverpool are not likely to splash out on a move for Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie in January despite his agent’s recent comments, sources have told Football Insider.

The 21-year-old’s representative, Manuel Sierra, has confirmed the Reds were interested in the defender during the summer window – and are among a number of clubs in discussions over a January move.

He also claimed Hincapie will not cost less than €50million (£43.25million).

However, it is believed Liverpool are not likely to spend that fee in the January window – despite the desire to add a left-sided centre-back to their ranks.

Hincapie’s involvement in the 2023-24 campaign thus far has been limited.

The Ecuador international has made just one start in a possible 10 games for Leverkusen so far this term.

Hincapie can not only play as a centre-back, but also as a left-back – and did so regularly for Leverkusen last term.

He made 43 appearances across all competitions in the 2022-23 campaign, notching one goal and one assist.

The left-footer moved to the German club from Argentine side Tallares in 2021.

The 21-year-old played three group games for Ecuador at the 2022 World Cup and has now made 27 appearances for his country despite his tender age.

Liverpool have several other options on their shortlist as they target a left-sided centre-back.

Football Insider revealed on Friday (6 October) that the Reds and Man United are keen on Sporting CP defender Goncalo Inacio – with the Portuguese side resigned to losing him in the near future.

Jurgen Klopp’s side sit fourth in the Premier League following their 2-2 draw against Brighton on Sunday (8 October).

The Reds are next in action against rivals Everton on 21 October.
