Sources: Major update on Martial's Man United future

Anthony Martial is not keen to continue in a backup role at Man United as his contract reaches a conclusion, sources have told Football Insider.

It is believed the 27-year-old is keen to become the main man again at this stage of his career, which has stagnated somewhat in the last few years.

There was interest in Martial in the summer window, but a move failed to materialise before the 1 September deadline and his future is up in the air again going into January.

Man United moved to sign Rasmus Hojlund in the summer window to address their goalscoring situation, and the Denmark international is now a regular starter for Erik ten Hag’s side.

Martial is out of contract in June 2024, but the Red Devils have the option to extend his deal by a further 12 months.

He has started just three games across all competitions this season, scoring once in the League Cup.

The ex-France international has been limited to a substitute role since Hojlund returned from injury to make his first start against Brighton on 16 September.

Man United achieved a third-place finish last season despite Martial hitting just nine goals in 29 appearances across all competitions.

Marcus Rashford was often forced to play an unfamiliar striker role as the ex-Monaco forward missed 33 games through several different injury problems.

Injuries have blighted Martial’s career at Old Trafford since he arrived for a reported initial fee of £38.5million in 2015.

He has racked up 89 goals and 54 assists in 307 appearances for the Red Devils since his signing.

The forward had a brief loan spell at Sevilla in the second half of the 2021-22 campaign, but managed just one goal and one assist in 12 games in Spain.
