Exclusive: Tottenham tipped to land big-money windfall by finance guru

Some might turn their noses up at the League Cup but success in the competition could be huge for Tottenham in terms of securing sponsorship windfalls.

That is according to author of The Price of Football and new Football Insider columnist Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to correspondent Adam Williams after Spurs reach the League Cup final with victory over Brentford on Tuesday.

Prize money for the team winning the competition is minuscule, £100,000 plus 45% of on-the-day Wembley gate receipts (nothing this year).

But, according to Maguire, it is reductive to look at it in this fashion as a League Cup win would trigger sponsor payout clauses and give Spurs a reputation boost which could strengthen their position when negotiating future commercial deals.

“They will have some clauses with sponsor contracts if they win any domestic competition. So they’ll get additional money from that,” he told Football Insider. 

“The criticism of Spurs is that they’ve not won the title since 1962, they’ve not won anything since 2008. Is it an emperor’s-new-clothes situation?

“Even if it’s just the Carabao Cup, it’s still a senior cup competition. It will help them when they are next in negotiations with sponsors. They’ll say ‘look, there are only three trophies in elite English football and we’ve got one of them’

“It will be beneficial. The prize money is an irrelevance, but from a reputational point of view, it will be a positive. And you can bet your bottom dollar Mourinho will be banging on about it if he wins it… He knows exactly how many trophies he’s won at every club he’s been at.

“Clearly, they can’t have a bus parade in current circumstances, but there are certainly a lot of positives in winning it. And it guarantees a European spot, of course.”

Spurs last silverware came in the 2007-08 iteration of the same competition.

Jose Mourinho is the most successful manager in the history of the League Cup alongside Alex Ferguson and Brian Clough — he will be hoping to move out ahead of the two legends of English football when the final takes place on 25 April.
