Kieran Maguire: Man City hit the jackpot with £36m+ boost
Man City are guaranteed an extra £36million in Champions League payments after topping the Uefa coefficient table.
That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about how Uefa’s new regulations will benefit City financially.
The Champions League’s new format from 2024/25 onwards means clubs will be ranked in Uefa’s coefficient table based on their success in Europe over the last five years instead of 10.
After winning the tournament in 2023 and reaching the semi-finals and final in that period, City are set to claim the top spot in the table.
As per current regulations, each position in the table is worth £1million, meaning the top-ranked side earns £32million from the 32-team competition.
The number of teams competing from 2024/25 onwards is expanding to 36, and Uefa also expects an increase in income from the tournament.

Maguire anticipates coefficient payments to be worth even more than £1million per spot, meaning City could be guaranteed over £36million just in coefficient payments alone.
“Man City will be delighted at the changes to the Uefa coefficient focusing on the results of the past five years,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.
“They won the competition and have been runners-up, so as a result of that they are in a position where they will become the highest-ranked team.
“Given the increased money expected to be in the competition, it is already worth £1million per ranking and that is set to increase.
“So being the top dog means they are guaranteed £36million in coefficient payments, and I expect that number to rise significantly higher in the 2024/25 season.“
