Kieran Maguire makes '£29m' Tottenham windfall claim - 'we're starting to talk telephone numbers'

Tottenham are guaranteed payments of over £29million if they qualify for the 2024/25 Champions League.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that it has ‘never been more important’ for clubs to qualify for the Champions League than it is this season.

The Champions League is set for a radical format change next season, with the tournament adopting the Swiss model which will introduce 36 teams and a league-style format before the knockout phase.

Uefa predict revenues to rise by as much as 33 per cent, which in turn will increase the prize money awarded to clubs in the competition.

Qualification to the tournament is worth £13.5million to all 32 teams according to current Uefa documents, but Maguire believes that figure could ‘double’ for the 2024/25 season.

“It’s never been more important to qualify for the Champions League than it has been for the 2024/25 season,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

The introduction of the Swiss model and the deals Uefa has signed with commercial partners will mean the qualification fee could double.

“It is around £14million this season, but that could rise to £28-29million in 2024/25.

“That’s already an extra £15million, and all teams have at least one more guaranteed home game, potentially two if you finish in the play-off positions.

“Tottenham will receive around £4million from each matchday, so those numbers will quickly add up.

Once you reach the knockout phases, we’re starting to talk telephone numbers, but you have to be in the competition to receive those payments so finishing inside that top five in the Premier League will be crucial.
