Kieran Maguire raises 'suspicion' as Liverpool agree to £130m deal
Liverpool and the Premier League’s ‘Big Six’ are trying to avoid independent regulation by offering the EFL £130million.
That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about the Premier League’s latest financial offer to the EFL.
As reported by The Times, Premier League clubs will be asked to agree to a deal that will provide the EFL with an additional £130million.
Negotiations over an improved deal have been ongoing for over a year, with the government threatening both parties that independent regulation will be introduced if an agreement is not finalised.
The EFL currently receives £110million in funding from the Premier League in solidarity payments but has been campaigning to grow that figure.
Maguire believes the £130million offer is the Premier League’s latest attempt to avoid independent regulation.

“The £130m deal on the table from the Premier League is part of a much broader strategy,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.
“They are trying to convince the government that an independent regulator is not required.
“Other sources suggest that this offer is far from transparent.
“It’s a case of trying to get the noise out there that Liverpool, Man United and the ‘Big Six’ are more benevolent than they actually are.
“They think the EFL clubs should be grateful recipients of this money but I have a suspicion that it’s not quite as clear-cut as the Premier League are trying to make out.“
