Kieran Maguire: Man United are 'very good at spending money' after mega-money reveal
Man United have the most expensive squad in the world but have been ‘wasteful’ when it comes to selling players.
That is the opinion of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about the poor transfer strategy at Old Trafford over the last decade.
As per a report by CIES Football Observatory this week, the Red Devils have the world’s most expensive squad at a cost of £1.15billion.
The Manchester club added an additional £180million to their squad cost this summer with Erik ten Hag spending big on the likes of Rasmus Hojlund, Andre Onana and Mason Mount.
Chelsea, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain are the only other clubs to have spent north of £1billion constructing their current squad.
Maguire believes United have been ‘wasteful’ in their spending and need to prioritise earning more money from player sales.

“I think that the best way to assess this is to look at the recovery of funds at Manchester United,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.
“They have only generated around 20 percent of the money that Chelsea have over the course of the last decade from player sales.
“Normally in any trading model you’re looking for a combination of long-term and short-term investments and things which you can flip and so on.
“I think a financial observer would say that Manchester United have been wasteful in that particular part of the business – they’re very good at spending money but not receiving it.
“So on a quantitative basis, they’re at the top table.
“But on a qualitative basis, there are very few players that Man United bought for excellent value in the last decade.“
