Kieran Maguire: MSP want to quit £100m Everton deal as contract clause revealed

MSP will want to recall their £100million loan to Everton if 777 Partners are confirmed as the club’s new owners.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that MSP Sports Capital will be looking for an ‘exit route’.

The Toffees are on the verge of completing a takeover, with Farhad Moshiri agreeing a deal with US-based investors 777 Partners to sell his majority stake in the Merseyside club.

Should the takeover be approved by the Premier League, Football Insider revealed that MSP have a ‘recall clause’ inserted into their £100million loan agreement with Everton.

MSP agreed to loan £100million to Everton to help with the construction of their new stadium after talks of a majority takeover collapsed.

Maguire believes MSP will look to trigger the clause and recall the loan, which would leave Everton’s new owners with the responsibility of returning the funds.

My understanding is that MSP are fairly relaxed with regards to 777 becoming Everton owners, mainly because they will be looking for an exit route,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

All major loans will have a change of control clause.

So if there is a new set of owners coming into the company, it doesn’t have to be a football club, then the lender reserves the right to assess the risk, assess their profile and make a decision as to whether they’re prepared to roll over that loan.

So from what I’ve heard, 777 are not an issue for MSP.

But, the likelihood is that MSP will want to get its money back because it doesn’t want to take on that lending risk to 777.

“So it makes it slightly more challenging for Josh Wonder and Co. because they’re going to have to find additional money much quicker.
