Kieran Maguire: Reading fans will enjoy new ownership twist as EFL intervene
Reading fans will welcome the EFL’s new strategy of fining club owner Yongge Dai for misconduct.
That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about the latest punishment issued to the Chinese businessman.
The EFL released a statement last Wednesday (20 September) revealing that Reading owner Yongge Dai has been charged with misconduct.
The charge forced Yongge to pay an amount equal to 125 per cent of the club’s forecast wage bill.
Reading have already faced a number of points deductions as a result of Yongge’s mishandling of the club and its finances.
Maguire believes there is more than enough interest in a Reading takeover, but it comes down to whether Yongge is too stubborn to sell the club.

“He signed a contract, and he’s failed to honour it,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.
“So you therefore have to ask what alternative sanctions are available to the EFL.
“Punishing the club through having a series of points deductions has failed to have any impact in terms of his behaviour,
“So instead of going after the institution, you have to go after the individual and this appears to be the strategy – I think Reading fans will welcome that
“There’s no doubt that there is interest in Reading.
“It does have some plus points – it’s not far away from major airports and it’s got good transport links to London.
“The stadium itself is of a decent size and of a decent quality, so there are opportunities there.
“It now comes down to how stubborn the owner is in terms of accepting a realistic price and moving on elsewhere.“
