Kieran Maguire 'surprised' by Angus Kinnear's £40m Leeds United claim
Leeds United have the funds to improve their squad in January and launch a ‘promotion charge’ after cutting their wage bill this summer.
That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about the comments made by Leeds CEO Angus Kinnear.
Kinnear spoke to the Square Ball podcast in September, where he revealed that the Yorkshire club has cut £40million from their wage bill during the summer transfer window.
“We’ve saved £40million in wages and brought in players who really want to be here,” Kinnear said.
Leeds lost 15 first-team players in the summer transfer window, with a large part of their squad leaving Elland Road on loan deals after triggering clauses in their contracts following their relegation to the Championship.
Maguire admitted that Kinnear’s comments ‘surprised’ him, but believes the wage cut has given Leeds enough financial ‘flexibility’ in January to bring in new signings.

“I think this will be a year of retrenchment as far as spending is concerned for Leeds,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.
“In the case of Leeds United, I’m surprised at the comments made by Angus Kinnear because you would have thought that players would also have significant step downs in terms of their wages,
“But it looks instead that the players have gone elsewhere provided that the replacements brought in by Leeds United are of a sufficient standard for the championship.
“They should have a bit of wiggle room in January and that will allow them the flexibility required to put in a significant promotion charge for this season.“
