Revealed: Frank Lampard 'keen' to be next Rangers manager and right some wrongs - sources

Ex-Everton and Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is on the shortlist to become the next manager of Rangers, sources have told Football Insider.

It is believed the 45-year-old has already held preliminary talks with Ibrox chiefs about the vacancy.

A well-placed source has told Football Insider that Lampard is “very keen” to land the role after his last full-time spell at Everton ended in his sacking.

Sources say Lampard is ready to put right some of the wrongs of his spells at Stamford Bridge and Goodison Park, his second and third jobs in senior management.

Rangers are without a manager after sacking Michael Beale on Sunday (1 October), leaving Steven Davis in interim charge of the Glasgow giants.

The Gers are in disarray on the pitch and sit some seven points behind league leaders Celtic after just seven games.

Rangers also suffered a shock 2-1 defeat against Cypriot side Aris Limassol in the Europa League on Thursday (5 October).

With Lampard very much in the frame, the search for a permanent new manager is now well underway at Ibrox as they look to get their season back on track.

The former England international returned to Chelsea at the end of the 2022-23 campaign on an interim basis following Graham Potter’s exit.

The legendary midfielder started his post-playing career in the hot seat at Derby County and narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier League in the 2018-19 campaign.

He was subsequently installed as Chelsea’s boss in the following season but managed just 44 wins in 84 games in charge before his sacking in January 2021.

Lampard made a return to management as Everton’s manager 12 months later but was sacked a year later with the Merseysiders in relegation trouble.

Rangers are next in action against St Mirren on Sunday (8 October).

The Gers have a good chance at silverware in the 2023-24 campaign in the Scottish League Cup, with rivals Celtic already out of the competition.
