Newcastle United agree 'massive' St James' Park boost - expert

Newcastle United are set to receive ‘massive’ financial benefits by hosting their own pre-season tournament at St James’ Park.

That is the view of finance expert Dr Dan Plumley, who exclusively told Football Insider that the Magpies will increase revenues and please sponsors through their summer plans.

Newcastle announced earlier this month (7 July) that they are set to host the inaugural Sela Cup at St James’ Park this summer.

The tournament will be organised by new front-of-shirt sponsor Sela, who specialise in event management in Saudi Arabia.

On top of their Sela Cup plans, Newcastle are set to compete in the Premier League’s Summer Series in the United States.

Plumley believes Newcastle will keep costs down by hosting many of their pre-season matches at their home ground.

It’s probably not as lucrative to host your own tournament compared to travelling to other markets and trying to leverage some commercial profile there,” Plumley told Football Insider.

But there are some massive financial benefits to home hosting, especially if you can sell all the tickets and there’s wider exposure there for the owners of the club and the companies that are now sponsoring Newcastle.

The flip side of the revenue equation is that it keeps the cost down because you’re not having to cover expenses to travel all the way around the world.

That also helps to improve the club’s carbon emissions.

So I think it’s a balancing act, and while they could have made more money by doing a lucrative preseason tour around the world, they have kept the cost low by staying at home.

Additionally, the extra branding of the cup will please sponsors.
