Revealed: Leeds United to spend £104m as document reveals all

Leeds United owe nearly £104million in outstanding transfer instalments, Football Insider can reveal.

The figure is detailed in their accounts for 2021-22, which were released last Saturday (8 April).

Leeds will pay £52.6m within the next 12 months, while the remaining £51.2m is owed beyond the current financial year.

Their total operating loss meanwhile was £34.5m on club-record turnover of £189.2m, up on a £10m loss during the previous Covid-hit year.

The transfer instalments bill is partly due to the £52m they spent to bring Daniel James, Junior Firpo and Kristoffer Klaesson to the club, with Jack Harrison also joining permanently after three seasons on loan from Man City.

The figure will rise when the time comes to release their 2022-23 accounts as they have spent over £100m on new recruits this season.

Another major expense was the £15.5m they have been forced to pay RB Leipzig for Jean-Kevin Augustin, who played just three times for them on loan in 2019-20.

Leeds had an obligation to buy clause which was triggered after they won promotion to the top flight, but they argued it was void because the end of the campaign was delayed by Covid.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport, however, ruled in Leipzig’s favour, landing Leeds with a £15.5m bill.

Commercial and matchday income meanwhile were up on the previous financial year, but media takings fell.

Leeds beat the drop on the final day of the season in 2021-22 and are battling relegation this term too.
