Agbonlahor 'sure' about Bruno Guimaraes quitting Newcastle as Liverpool approach revealed

Gabby Agbonlahor has backed Bruno Guimaraes to pledge his long-term future to Newcastle despite reported interest from Liverpool, Chelsea and Real Madrid.

The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed he is “sure” the 25-year-old will choose to extend his deal at St James’ Park despite negotiations rumbling on for a long period.

It is believed that Guimaraes is “very close” to signing a new contract at Newcastle – which could include a release clause worth in excess of £100million.

The report claims the Brazil international was the subject of enquiries from Chelsea and Liverpool in the last two transfer windows, while Spanish giants Real Madrid have also registered an interest.

Guimaraes, who has managed 10 goals and six assists in 61 appearances for Newcastle, is currently under contract until June 2026.

The 6-foot-tall midfielder cost a reported fee of £40million when he joined the Magpies from Lyon in January 2022.

When asked if Guimaraes could yet move to a more established European giant, Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I think he’ll be happy to stay at Newcastle.

“He’s part of the rebuild there, with the fantastic season last year. I like him a lot.

“He’s a very talented player.

“Newcastle are going places. I’m sure he’ll enjoy playing in the Champions League with them this season.

“I’m sure that contract will be agreed and he will see his long-term future at Newcastle.”
