Agbonlahor disagrees with Klopp as he weighs in on Liverpool controversy - 'look at this'

Gabby Agbonlahor has insisted Liverpool star Curtis Jones deserved to be sent off for his “accidental” challenge on Tottenham’s Yves Bissouma last week as Jurgen Klopp insisted the officials got it totally wrong.

The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the midfielder “caught Bissouma in a bad place” despite not setting out to hurt the Spurs star.

Jones was shown a straight red card in the first half of Liverpool’s 2-1 loss against Tottenham on Saturday (30 September) after catching Bissouma high during a 50-50 challenge.

He was originally shown a yellow card for the tackle, but his punishment was upgraded after VAR reviewed the incident.

Liverpool lodged an appeal but confirmed on Tuesday (3 October) that they had been unsuccessful.

Jones will now serve a three-match suspension, missing games against Brighton, Everton and Nottingham Forest this month.

The midfielder has turned out six times across all competitions this season for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Speaking on Wednesday, Klopp insisted the Jones decision was wrong.

“The ref got called to the screen and saw for the first three seconds a frozen picture. I would give immediately a red card for that picture,” said Klopp.

“Then he sees the replay in slow motion. I would have given a red card for the slow motion, but in real time it is not a red card.”

Agbonlahor disagrees with the Liverpool boss as he told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “It’s a definite red card, Klopp is wrong.

“I looked at the player’s reaction as well. Bissouma’s not the type to stay down, he was hurt.

“It’s unfortunate, but you can have an accidental red card. The first one I saw was Nani, who caught someone with a high foot years ago and was sent off.

“Curtis Jones is unlucky, but it was a red.

“That’s why the appeal wasn’t successful. For me, it’s an accident – but he’s caught the player in a bad place.”

The red card was the first of Jones’ career.

Liverpool, who sit fourth in the Premier League, are next in action against Union Saint-Gilloise in the Europa League on Thursday (5 October).
