Revealed: Liverpool could now bank £58m jackpot after new development

Liverpool are back in the running for a Champions League spot that would bank them at least £58million, Football Insider analysis shows.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are now just one point off Man United in 4th, although their arch-rivals do have a game in hand over the Merseysiders.

Qualifying for the Champions League looked a remote possibility this time last month, when Liverpool were 12 points off the pace.

But the latest twist in the race for the top four has seen them win their last six matches, a run that has coincided with collapses in form from both United and Tottenham.

Brighton could have overtaken Liverpool had they won their two upcoming games in hand, but Monday’s (8 May) shock 5-1 demolition at the hands of Everton means they will now trail the Reds by a point even if they take six points.

Liverpool would be guaranteed a £13.6million participation fee if they secure a place in the draw for next season’s Champions League group stage.

Clubs are also awarded cash from Uefa based on their 10-year coefficient, which ranks teams based on their performance in European competition over the last decade.

Liverpool, who won the competition in 2018-19 and have reached the final on three occasions in the last 10 years, are currently 9th in Uefa’s coefficient table.

With each place in the ranking worth approximately an extra £1m, Liverpool would earn around £24m from that particular pot.

Meanwhile, Uefa’s market pool – the combined total of Uefa’s broadcast and commercial deals which is divided between clubs based on how much their country contributes – will be worth roughly £13.7m to Liverpool.

Anfield would also be guaranteed to host at least three sold-out European matchdays, with the Anfield Road Stand expansion set to take capacity to 61,000 in time for the new season.

Our analysis shows that Liverpool could earn as much as £3m per matchday, meaning the club would trouser an additional £9m in money through the turnstiles.

That means Liverpool would earn a bare minimum of £58.3m if they can overtake United in the race for the top four.

That sum could increase significantly with progress in the competition, with Uefa handing out £2.5m for every win and £825,000 for a draw in the group stage.

Another £52.2m is then available in prize money throughout the knockout rounds.

Liverpool face Leicester City, Aston Villa and Southampton in their final three matches this term, while United’s four remaining fixtures are against Wolves, Bournemouth, Chelsea and Fulham.
