A sponsorship deal between the Botswana tourist board and Newcastle United looks increasingly likely, sources have told Football Insider.

The Magpies held talks with representatives from Botswana about a sleeve sponsorship deal last summer before they eventually inked a deal with Noon.com, whose partnership with the club will continue into next season.

The tourist board – who have coveted a Premier League sponsorship deal for some time – has since re-engaged Newcastle about an alternative commercial arrangement.

Significantly, Botswana have significantly strengthened their ties with Newcastle’s de-factor owners, the government of Saudi Arabia, in recent times.

The countries’ respective Football Associations announced a new strategic alliance earlier this month, which will focus on grassroots development, the women’s game, and coaching programmes.

Sources have previously told this site that Botswana’s tourist board had held exploratory talks with Chelsea.

However, Newcastle now represent a more viable partner for the south African nation.

The Tynesiders are potentially one victory away from guaranteeing participation in the Champions League next season but would still be a more affordable option than Chelsea.

Their brand is developing at pace and commercial income is expected to skyrocket next season, especially given that they are on the verge of announcing a £25m-a-year front-of-shirt deal.

Under the terms of the Premier League and Uefa’s financial fair play systems, raising sponsorship and merchandise revenue is key to Newcastle’s plans in the transfer market.

Football Insider analysis has found that their turnover could soar to over £265m next season, which would make them one of the world’s top-15 earning clubs.
