Exclusive: 27-yr-old heads to Bolton Wanderers after Swindon termination

Dion Donohue is on trial with Bolton Wanderers after being released by Swindon Town earlier this month, Football Insider understands.

The 27-year-old defender, who re-signed for the Robins on a free transfer back in September, played 11 times for the League One outfit this season, with assistant manager Tommy Wright stating his exit was due to “personal reasons”.

A source at Bolton has told Football Insider the left-back has linked up with the League Two to train as manager Ian Evatt runs the rule over the former Chesterfield and Portsmouth star.

Donohue initially joined Swindon on a month-by-month contract back in October 2019 after being released by Mansfield Town earlier that year.

He started and played the full 90 minutes in five successive League One games during his first month at the club but did not feature again before the Robins chose not to extend his deal past January.

However, after eight months without a club, he returned to the County Ground early on this season and played regularly under former manager Richie Wellens.

The left-sided defender had kept his place in the side following John Sheridan’s appointment but made his final appearance against Gillingham earlier in December.

He has a total of 106 League One games under his belt, while he also has played seven times in League Two.

Donohue has linked up with a Bolton side who started Saturday sitting 12th in the fourth-tier table after 18 games.

Ian Evatt has chopped and changed at left-back this season, with Reiss Greenidge, Gethin Jones and Harry Brockbank having all filled in on occasion.

In other news, Football Insider can reveal a former Sheffield Wednesday star is also on trial with Bolton Wanderers.
