Kieran Maguire issues 'brilliant' Sunderland claim after £26m reveal
It is a ‘brilliant achievement’ for Sunderland to record a turnover of £26million in 2021/22 while playing in League One.
That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about the impressive financial accounts released from the Stadium of Light.
Sunderland released their 2021/22 financial accounts late last month (28 April), revealing a turnover of £26.1m at the club.
It marked a significant increase of £15.4m from their accounts the year prior when Covid-19 had a major impact on revenue.
The Black Cats recorded an operating loss of £5.1m over the period, but the Wearside club’s investment has translated to the pitch and they now find themselves in the Championship play-offs in their first year back in the second tier.
Maguire hailed the club’s turnover considering their position in League One, suggesting ‘the numbers were as good as could be expected’.

“Sunderland’s accounts for 2021/22 show the potential of the football club, and suggests they spent too long in the third-tier of English football,” Maguire told Football Insider.
“The responsibility for that must go to the decision-makers behind the scenes.
“The numbers were as good as could be expected.
“Turning over as much as £26million in the third tier is an amazing achievement and shows that the club does have the capacity to be competitive in the Championship and Premier League.
“I’m sure all Sunderland fans will be anxiously monitoring their play-off progress next Monday.“
