Liverpool have been in hot pursuit of Romeo Lavia and have held extensive talks over a deal with Southampton but have yet to match their £50m asking price.
The shock move for Caicedo comes after he was ruled out as a potential target by the Merseysiders earlier in the window.
An £80m-plus fee would smash Liverpool’s transfer record, which is still held by the £75m paid to Southampton for Virgil van Dijk.
With Arsenal recently completing the £105m capture of Declan Rice, that appeared to put Chelsea in pole position to land Caicedo, who has his heart set on quitting Brighton before the transfer window shuts.
