Hutton tips another new Rangers contract after 'incredible' Tavernier news

Alan Hutton has tipped the “outstanding” James Tavernier to stay past the end of his new Rangers contract.

The former Gers star, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, lauded the 29-year-old for his “incredible” performances and insisted he was a major part of the club’s recent success.

As confirmed on Tuesday, the Ibrox captain has committed himself to a two-year extension which will keep him tied down until 2023.

Since signing from Wigan in 2015, Tavernier has played 284 times for the Gers across all competitions.

A potent threat in attack and a set-piece specialist, the full-back has netted a remarkable 17 goals this season.

He has also helped keep Rangers tight at the back, with just eight goals conceded in his 29 league appearances.

Hutton insisted Tavernier had played a significant role in the club’s title win and that he could continue to flourish with his new deal signed.

Hutton told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge: He’s so important to what Rangers do in every sense.

“Especially going forward, I mean his stats are incredible, absolutely incredible, something I’ve never seen from a full-back really in all my years.

“He’s been outstanding, it’s probably been his best season so far in a Rangers shirt so he definitely deserves it.

“Rangers are building something for the future at the moment. Why would you not want to be part of that?

“They’re just at the start and they’re going for another trophy in the Scottish Cup. They’ll want to build on these victories.

“You see how much it means to them winning the league. If I was him, I’d want to be part of that for the next three, four seasons anyway.”

In other news, Rangers could crush another star’s dreams with contract decision due.
