Mills: Rangers told to agree new deal with Defoe after what he's heard

Danny Mills has urged Rangers to sort out Jermain Defoe’s contract and keep him at Ibrox.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-England and Leeds United defender insisted the veteran forward’s attitude off the pitch is invaluable to the younger players.

Defoe was handed a rare start against Cove Rangers in the Scottish Cup last weekend and rewarded Steven Gerrard’s faith in him by finding the net.

After the game, the 38-year-old told Premier Sports he was desperate to play in front of the Ibrox faithful again after their historic 55th title.

Football Insider revealed earlier this year he will have to take a pay cut on his mega £30,000-a-week wages to realise his dream with his current deal set to expire in the summer.

“He’s adding to the squad in terms of work ethic, personality,” Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“He’s good to have around, he’s helping the younger players develop and if the financial package is right for him and the club, why wouldn’t you keep him around?

“It’s a balancing act of having a good player with experience that the younger players can learn from on and off the pitch by the way he conducts himself which I’m led to believe is absolutely superb. That’s a bonus.

“But of course, if the wage demands are too high it’s not workable, it’s not possible.

“If he’s prepared to take a cut in wages and stay there then it could work for everybody.”

Defoe has scored five goals and provided two assists in 15 games across all competitions this season, including three league starts.

The 57-time England international has found the net 40 times in 67 games across his Ibrox career.
