Liverpool to rue missing out on 'outstanding' £43m defender as Joe Gomez slated - Agbonlahor
Gabby Agbonlahor has suggested Liverpool will rue missing out on “outstanding” new Tottenham signing Micky van de Ven.
The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the Merseysiders need a new centre-back signing in the final days of the window as Joe Gomez is “not the answer”.
Gomez is likely to line up alongside Joel Matip for Liverpool’s next game against Aston Villa on Sunday (3 September).
Virgil van Dijk is suspended for the clash, while Ibrahima Konate is injured and will not return until after the international break.
Tottenham wrapped up the signing of Van de Ven for a reported £43million earlier this month despite prolonged interest from Liverpool.
Football Insider revealed last week (25 August) that Jurgen Klopp’s side are desperate to add a centre-back and central midfielder before Friday’s (1 September) transfer deadline.

When asked if Liverpool need another centre-back signing, Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “They do.
“Matip is just okay, Konate always seems to be injured – but Gomez just isn’t the answer.
“He’ll have a good game, then he’ll have a 0/10 game.
“They need to go and invest in a top centre-half.
“The player who would have suited Liverpool is Micky van de Ven at Spurs.
“He looks outstanding. If you put him next to Van Dijk, that’s a strong partnership.
“I think they definitely need a centre-back in these last few days.”
