Sources: Newcastle work on signing Tonali replacement - and this is what it means for Guimaraes role

Newcastle United are set to enter the market for a defensive midfielder signing in January as they brace for Sandro Tonali to be banned, sources have told Football Insider.

The Magpies confirmed on Wednesday (18 October) that Tonali, 23, is the subject of an investigation by the Italian Prosecutor’s Office and Italian Football Federation (FIGC) in relation to “illegal betting activity”.

If found guilty, the former AC Milan star is expected to receive a lengthy ban from football.

In the meantime, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has confirmed Tonali remains available for selection for his side’s clash with Crystal Palace on Saturday (21 October).

Howe admitted the Italian has had a “very, very difficult couple of weeks” but is “handling himself really well”.

A well-placed source has described the situation as a “big blow” for Newcastle.

It is believed Howe had hoped his arrival would free up Brazil international Bruno Guimaraes to star in a more advanced midfield role.

They are therefore keen to plug any potential gap in the squad if Tonali is indeed handed down a long-term ban.

The scouting and recruitment staff at St James’ Park are now believed to be scouring the market for midfield reinforcements, with a replacement now the club’s top priority for the January window.

Tonali was drafted in from AC Milan during the recent summer window for a reported £55million.

The Italy international, 23, has made 10 appearances so far this season.

Newcastle sit eighth in the Premier League as they prepare to face off against Crystal Palace.

The Magpies are also in Champions League action next week, hosting Borussia Dortmund in their third Group F game.
