Sources: Newcastle United priority January signing revealed

Signing a central midfielder is now the top priority for Newcastle United in the January transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

The Magpies have been “surprised” by the controversy surrounding Sandro Tonali and alleged betting rules breaches – which has forced their hand ahead of the next window.

Newcastle confirmed on Wednesday (18 October) that Tonali, 23, is the subject of an investigation by the Italian Prosecutor’s Office and Italian Football Federation (FIGC) in relation to “illegal betting activity”.

The former AC Milan midfielder could face a lengthy ban if he is found guilty.

Eddie Howe and Newcastle transfer chiefs are aware that they will have a lot of games to juggle should they advance to the latter stages of the Champions League or Europa League.

A well-placed source has told Football Insider that a new midfielder is now the “top priority” target ahead of the January transfer window.

It is believed this new development has superseded any other potential targets Newcastle had in mind.

Tonali was drafted in from AC Milan during the recent summer window for a reported £55million and has been a regular starter for Howe’s side.

He penned a contract at St James’ Park running until June 2028.

Howe also has Bruno Guimaraes, Sean Longstaff, Joelinton, Elliot Anderson, Joe Willock and Lewis Miley to call on in midfield.

However – Willock, Miley and Joelinton are currently out injured.

Newcastle are next in action against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Wednesday (25 October).
