Shackleton tipped to join new club this season after Hay's Leeds reveal - Mills

Danny Mills has tipped Jamie Shackleton to leave Leeds United on a season-long loan deal this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Whites and England defender insisted Shackleton needs to prove himself away from Elland Road.

Phil Hay of the Athletic reported yesterday (4 August) that there are a number of clubs interested in taking the 21-year-old on loan, including Bournemouth.

As first revealed by Football Insider on 26 July, Leif Davis has already moved to Bournemouth on loan from Leeds.

The Championship club have an option to buy the defender at the end of the season.

Shackleton made 13 Premier League appearances last term, including three starts, and has impressed in pre-season.

However, Mills has claimed a temporary move away is the next step in his development.

He told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “I think a loan move would be a good move for him. He needs to get out there and prove himself.

“Let’s be honest, he’s going to be on the bench most of the time at Leeds. He might come off the bench, five minutes here and 10 minutes there, max.

“If I was him, I’d be thinking ‘Right, ok, I’ve got a bit of a taste of first-team football, I want more of it’. If that’s the case then he has to go out on loan.”

Leeds-born Shackleton has played 63 times across all competitions for his boyhood club.

The former England Under-20 international played 22 times in the Championship in 2019-20 as the Whites won the title.
