Kieran Maguire: Leeds United could now reap dividends from loan clause 'gamble'

Leeds United could benefit financially from their loan clauses if they are able to sell players for more value next summer.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that Leeds players may benefit from a year away from Elland Road.

The Yorkshire side sent eight first-team players out on loan this summer after including relegation clauses in their contracts that allowed them to leave.

Maguire previously told Football Insider that Leeds took a ‘gamble’ on transfers and should reconsider their transfer strategy under new ownership.

However, Maguire now believes the loan clauses ‘could be beneficial’ if Leeds are able to sell players next summer for higher value.

Leeds United will be already receiving loan fees in respect of those players,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

At the same time, they won’t necessarily be paying all of those players’ wages, so there’s going to be a trade-off.

“A lot will depend on where Leeds United are playing next season and whether those players who contributed towards the club being relegated are good enough for the Premier League in 2024/25.

Having had a year outside of the club with a change of culture and background so potentially it could be beneficial.

I think it’s indicative of the previous regime looking for an exit route and not wanting to commit themselves to significant financial costs as a result of that.

We’ll wait to see what happens with regards to the playing side of things.
