Everton tipped to offload two senior stars in January after source's transfer reveal - pundit

Noel Whelan has tipped Everton to offload up to two stars in January to boost their transfer kitty.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds striker claimed a handful of players would be happy to leave in search of regular first-team football.

An Everton source has told Football Insider (9th October) the Toffees are set to be limited in their spending in January due to Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.

The Merseyside outfit relied heavily on loans and free transfers this summer, with Demarai Gray the only player bought for a fee.

Despite offloading James Rodriguez’s £250,000-a-week wages, Everton’s director of football Marcel Brands still has a meagre transfer budget.

As such, Whelan suggested the Toffees could luck to get another couple of players off the books, either on loan or permanently.

“I think you’ve got to assess the squad depth,” Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.

“Stuff like injuries, who’s in form, who’s not in form. You can’t just throw players out and weaken your squad.

“Ideally, if they can sell one or two or send them out on loan then they will be happy. That is if they are surplus to requirements.

“I think trimming is a big part of the game. If they are not going to use them, then they might as well get some money off the books. Make sure you’re not paying for £30m players that are going to be sitting there doing nothing.

“I’m pretty sure the players would like to go out on loan. To go play football and earn their money that way as well.

“Conversations will need to take place between player, manager and club, no doubt about that. If they can get suitors for these players, I’m sure they’ll think about it strongly.”
