Newcastle United controversy should spark major VAR change after BBC update - pundit

Alan Hutton is adamant Newcastle United’s goal against Crystal Palace should have been allowed on Saturday (3 September).

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Tottenham and Aston Villa right-back said referees need to be shown all angles of an incident on the pitchside monitor.

As shown on Sky Sports (3 September), Crystal Palace defender Tyrick Mitchell turned the ball into his own net and referee Michael Salisbury ruled it out for a foul by Joe Willock on goalkeeper Vicente Guaita.

The Magpies felt Willock was pushed into the goalkeeper by Mitchell.

The game finished 0-0 at St James’ Park

As reported by the BBC (4 September), the Professional Game Match Officials Limited will work with the Premier League to review the decision.

They will also be reviewing West Ham’s disallowed goal against Chelsea.

Hutton claimed referees need to be shown all the angles of a challenge to help them make the correct decision.

I saw all of the angles of it and the main angle you had to see was the one from behind where you actually see the shove on Willock’s back which takes him in to the goalkeeper,” he told Football Insider.

“It should’ve been a goal it’s a simple as that. I think, for the refs to make the best decision, they need to see all the angles. Whatever we see, if there’s different angles they need to see it all then they can make their decision.

If they only see it once from the front, he can’t see the push so it just looks like he careered into the goalkeeper which is a foul, whereas he was actually pushed into him.

They have to see all the information, so whoever is gathering it has to make sure all the angles and bases are covered.
