Newcastle United news: Pundit issues 'crazy' verdict on Joe Willock controversy after twist reported

Kevin Campbell is unimpressed by Lee Mason being dropped after his “crazy” decision cost Newcastle United two points against Crystal Palace.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Arsenal and Everton striker said the decision to drop the 50-year-old “does no good” for Eddie Howe’s side.

Newcastle looked to have opened the scoring when Palace defender Tyrick Mitchell turned the ball into his own net.

However, referee Michael Salisbury ruled out the goal after consulting the pitch-side monitor on the advice of VAR official Lee Mason.

As reported by the Daily Mail (6 September), Lee Mason has been dropped from VAR duties this weekend following his role in the controversial decision.

Mason was also on VAR duties when Gabriel Martinelli’s goal against Man United was contentiously disallowed for a foul on Christian Eriksen.

“It is after the horse has bolted.

“Ok, you drop him this week but get the thing right at the time. It is blatant!

“The fact that he is not going to be officiating as this week does not help Newcastle. It does them no good. They should have had three points.

“Accountability, ok fine. We need to get these decisions right though. It is not as if it is a hard decision to make. This is basic. When you look at it, it’s an easy one.

“None of the Palace players complained. Mitchell looked as guilty as any when the ball went in. VAR turned it upside down. It is crazy.

“I would much rather them get it right on the day.”
