Ex-Fifa official issues 'horrendous' claim as Joe Willock probe launched at Newcastle United
Tyrick Mitchell’s own goal in Crystal Palace’s 0-0 draw with Newcastle United on Saturday (3 September) should not have been ruled out for a foul by Joe Willock.
That is the view of ex-Fifa and Premier League referee Keith Hackett, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the “horrific” decision to penalise a foul by Willock.
The 23-year-old collided with goalkeeper Vicente Guaita before the ball rebounded on to Mitchell and into the net.
However, Lee Mason, one of two full-time VAR operators on the Premier League, told referee Michael Salisbury to disallow the goal.
BBC Sport reported on Sunday (4 September) that the PGMOL had effectively accepted the decision was wrong as the Premier League prepare to review the incident.
“The goal that was ruled out, let me tell you, the goal should have been allowed,” Hackett said after analysing the footage with Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“What has happened is, the referee has seen Willock going into the goalkeeper, that’s why he’s disallowed it.
“What he seems not to have picked up, is that Willock was pushed by Palace’s Mitchell into the goalkeeper. That is why this goal should have been allowed, not disallowed. It was a wrong decision.
“They need to sort it. The broadcast footage is available to them and they are expected to interrogate it and get the decision right.
“Ultimately, they got it wrong and I think it’s poor form to say the clip they wanted was not available to them.
“If they look at what they’ve seen, there is a clear push.
“It’s clutching at straws to get out of jail when they’ve made a horrendous error.”
