Sources: Former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino 'pushing for Chelsea job' amid new Graham Potter doubts

Mauricio Pochettino has told friends he is keen on the Chelsea manager’s job, sources have told Football Insider.

The Argentine has been linked with the England job after Gareth Southgate expressed doubts over whether he will continue as manager following Saturday’s World Cup exit.

Pochettino, who is an Anglophile and has a home in London, will come into the reckoning for the post but he is also believed to be interested in taking over at Stamford Bridge were the job to become available.

One source said that former Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain manager Pochettino has been “pushing for the Chelsea job” behind the scenes.

He held talks with Aston Villa during their recent manager search, as first revealed by Football Insider, but pulled out of the running as he felt the club does not have the squad to implement his high-energy playing style.

Graham Potter’s position at Chelsea is not under immediate threat and he will be in charge again when the Premier League resumes in a fortnight’s time.

But, sources with knowledge of Chelsea’s plans, say the World Cup came at an opportune time for Potter with club owners led by Todd Boehly becoming increasingly alarmed by results.

Chelsea lost three consecutive Premier League matches before the season break, including a humiliating 4-1 demolition at the hands of Potter’s former club Brighton.

They were also eliminated from the League Cup by Man City and the lack of impact made by the recently-appointed manager is said to be a major concern.

It is likely that Potter’s position will come under threat if he does not oversee a considerable improvement either side of the new year.
