McAvennie: My sources tell me this is the Celtic manager latest amid approach to new target

Frank McAvennie has been told by his sources he is hearing multiple names ‘pinging about’ as Celtic step up their hunt to find a new manager.

The former Celtic striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, also went as far as to say that the club don’t know ‘who’s coming or going’ at the moment.

Eddie Howe’s representative has told Sky Sports he won’t be taking a new job until the summer while this site revealed the Hoops have made contact with ex-Dortmund boss Lucien Favre as an alternative option.

McAvennie, who lives in Glasgow and is closely connected to the club, has been told that several names are in the frame for the job but he isn’t completely sold on Favre.

“I would just like someone to come in who knows what the club is all about,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs.

“That’s the biggest problem. Some people come into Celtic but they don’t have the club in their heart.

“He [Favre] doesn’t really excite me, he didn’t win trophies at Dortmund but Jurgen Klopp was at Dortmund so they’re a good club for managers.

“There are names pinging about all over the place up here, they don’t know who’s coming or going.

“But if Howe says no, they haven’t put all their eggs in one basket and I’m told by my sources if they have to start again, they can.

“It’s got to be someone who knows what they’re doing, they can’t take risks with this new manager.”

Favre was sacked by Dortmund in December 2020 after a string of bad results though his Signal Iduna Park career started off with a record unbeaten run, winning or drawing his first 15 games in charge.

Celtic have been looking for a new manager since the end of February after Neil Lennon resigned following a loss to Ross County.

In other news, a Celtic colossus could join a Premier League side for just £5million after a reported update, according to a top pundit.
