McGregor may quit Celtic for Leicester City on this one condition - McLeish

Callum McGregor could quit Celtic for Leicester City if he can accept being a squad player in the Premier League.

That is the view of former Scotland boss Alex McLeish who, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted the 27-year-old would be a “massive loss” for the Bhoys.

The Sun report Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers is keen to reunite with McGregor and is readying a bid for the summer.

McGregor has been a near-ever present for Celtic this season and has played every minute in all but two league games so far.

He sat out his first game of the whole campaign last weekend in the Scottish Cup win over Falkirk.

McLeish admitted he could see why Rodgers wanted to sign McGregor after working with him at Parkhead.

However, he insisted the midfielder would have to accept less game time than he is getting with the Hoops.

“That would be a big miss for Celtic,” McLeish told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge.

“McGregor really is a terrific footballer and has a great idea about the game. I can see why Brendan would go for him, and he would be a massive loss to Celtic.

“He would know that he will be part of a really top squad. He wouldn’t necessarily be playing every game. I don’t know the strategy of 27-year-olds and upwards nowadays.

“In my day, I wanted to play even when I was 32. I wanted to play every game and obviously, I couldn’t. In the modern-day, the players get rotated far more than they did back in the day that I played. 

“Therefore, if Callum can accept that type of system where it may not be the first choice every week, then it’s a good opportunity for him to move.

“It would be a big loss to Celtic. It depends on how tight the heartstrings are in terms of his relationship with Celtic football club.”
