Howe may be on verge of big Celtic mistake after source reveals the latest - pundit

Eddie Howe would be making a huge mistake if he turns down the chance to manager Celtic, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Aberdeen striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted it would be “strange” if the out-of-work manager was scared off by the pressure of the Bhoys.

As revealed by Football Insider, the 43-year-old verbally agreed to take charge of Celtic last week but a sources has told this site the board are concerned he has had second thoughts.

It is understood the Hoops fear the former Bournemouth boss may be put off by the immense pressure of managing a club expected to win every single game.

This site has also detailed how Celtic chiefs are aware of a potential ambush from Crystal Palace.

Howe, who has previously worked at Burnley and Bournemouth, has been out of work since leaving the Cherries in 2020.

Whelan insisted Howe would face pressure at any club and that he would be “silly” to turn down the Bhoys

“I think as a manager you’re expected to win every game, even in the Premier League,” Whelan told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge.

“The lifespan of a manager is all about winning, no matter what level you’re at. If you’re not winning games, then you lose your job. There’s pressure on whether you’re in division one, division two, the Championship, Premier League or Scottish Premiership.

“He should know that. When you’re at a bigger club like Celtic, nine times out of ten you should be winning every game.

“If that is the case, it’s a really strange thing for Eddie Howe to be coming out with or feeling. It doesn’t matter, as a manager you’re expected to win football matches and if you don’t, you get sacked.

“I think if he doesn’t take this job then he’s been a little bit silly. It’s a great job to have if you get it right. There will be money to spend and the competition will be great to be in. You’re in Europe as well.

“Why would you not want to take that job? It’s a job that would have many people rubbing their hands together.”
