McAvennie verdict on Celtic re-signing Elyounoussi after Southampton slash price tag by £11m
Celtic should re-sign Mohamed Elyounoussi this summer with Southampton looking to assess their asset during the close season.
That’s according to former Celtic striker Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Hoops’ summer transfer plans.
Elyounoussi, 26, has spent the last two seasons on loan at Celtic Park with his future reportedly up in the air ahead of the summer transfer window.
Football Insider understands parent club Southampton have slashed Elyounoussi’s asking price to £5million, £11million less than they paid back in 2018.
McAvennie admits that he has changed his mind about Elyounoussi after his improved performances in the last few weeks and urged Celtic to make a move this summer.
“He’d not done enough for me but he’s come back in the last few weeks and he’s been brilliant,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs.

“It depends what the money is. I don’t know what the fee would be or even if Southampton want to keep him.
“I’d imagine they don’t want him at Southampton so the fee wouldn’t be too much unless there is somebody else who wants to try and take him.
“I would take him, he can score goals and cause plenty of problems so you’d definitely have him in your squad.”
Elyounoussi scored the opening goal in last month’s Old Firm draw with Rangers as he terrorised Leon Balogun on the left-hand side in the first half and was arguably the best player on the pitch.
That header took his Scottish Premiership goal haul for this season to eight with four assists also coming in 29 appearances.
In other Celtic news, McAvennie’s sources have given him the latest on the Hoops’ hunt for a new manager after an Eddie Howe bombshell.
